Stoneham Golf Club
18 hole medal for handicaps up to 20.4 and stableford for handicaps 20.5 – 36.4 for ladies over 50 years of age on the day of the competition
The Seniors Championship got underway this morning with a very hospitable welcome at Stoneham GC on a pleasantly warm summer’s day.
However, the day started not so pleasantly with major traffic issues on the motorways and the roads surrounding, but 87 ladies in the silver division battled their way to Stoneham to play their medal round. Many thanks to all who obliged and agreed to set off from the 1st at earlier times to accommodate the later arrivals.
Also, many thanks to our Seniors’ Captain Gemma Duxfield from Royal Winchester, and so ably assisted by her husband Rob, for arriving very early at 7.00 am to take control of the ensuing difficulties and smooth the way for all those stuck in the traffic chaos. Rob took command of the 2s competition, which is proving very popular, and there were 24 2s on the day so apoloogies about the small amount of return! However our HLCGA Juniors will benefit too. Also arriving that early were our referees Di Stock and Jackie Keay who, for once, had warmer conditions whilst out on the course for 12 hours!
Low scores proved difficult to come by but then Romsey’s Julie Cole came in with an excellent gross 76 nett 70 to win both the 2019 Seniors Champion Trophy and the Nett Champion title.

38 ladies followed in the Bronze division stableford. The staging of this event at Stoneham is slap bang in the middle of their Captains’ Day and their Championships and so the tough conditions may have caught many players out. The CSS for the afternoon’s stableford rose to 74 with reductions only as only a few managed to get into the 30s with the back 9 proving very difficult especially. However, the 2019 Bronze Champion is in-form Jo Youngs from Blacknest with a score of 33 points.
Congratulations to all our prize winners and all who played. As HLCGA Seniors’ Captain Gemma Duxfield said in her speech it was a fantastic turnout for our Seniors Championship.

The course was in excellent condition, and County Captain Debbie Tapply praised the efforts of Manager Richard Arnold, Assistant Lawrence and all the staff at Stoneham for a very enjoyabe (if long and, at times, fraught!) day. The meal afterwards was amazing!
See you at Royal Winchester in 2020 a bit later in July.
