An absolutely wonderful day was enjoyed by all at Blackmoor GC on Wednesday, 8 April, at the 2015 Junior Girls’ County Championships. Although the fields were smaller than usual this year, the standard of play remained high. Fourteen girls took part in the 36-hole Championships and five played in the Douglas Cup 18-hole Stableford for girls with handicaps from 21-36. After the first eighteen holes of the Championship Hampshire Junior Captain Emma Higgins (Highcliffe Castle) was one ahead of Katy Mackworth-Praed (North Hants). Overall the standard had been so good that the morning CSS actually reduced to 73 from the course’s SSS of 74. With that in mind it is clear that the race to become 2015 Handicap Champion was very close indeed at the half way stage – a total of five girls had played to CSS or better, and three were tied on 70. Beth Goater (Hockley) top scored in the afternoon round, with Katy M-P again just one back in second spot for that eighteen. Again five players had nett scores below the afternoon CSS, which again reduced to 73 – great golf from our Championship division girls throughout the day which had produced our two new 2015 champions: Katy Mackworth-Praed (County Junior Champion) and Maddie Ripiner (Meon Valley) (County Junior Handicap Champion). It had been a great pleasure to watch both the champions and all the girls in the event play, and very reassuring that the future of Hampshire golf is in such good hands.
In the Douglas Cup the golf was also very good and in many cases improved dramatically after the nervous start that most of us experience on the first tee at the lovely Blackmoor GC! CSS remained at 74 in this event, matching the course SSS, and after 18 holes two players, Brooke MacArthur (Wellow) and Hannah Cusworth (Westridge) were tied on 32 points. On countback, Hannah’s excellent 19 points on the back nine identified the 2015 Douglas Cup winner. It was the first time Hannah, from the Isle of Wight, had either played on a mainland course or entered a Hampshire competition!
Very many thanks to Blackmoor GC for allowing us to hold this prestigious championship on their lovely course which was, as always, beautifully presented, and for their always warm welcome. Thanks also too, of course, to all the players who gave those of us watching such a very enjoyable day. Looking forward again to seeing you all around the fairways here and there throughout the season, and especially at the Junior Autumn Meeting in October.
