We enjoyed a wonderful Championships Week at Meon Valley GC this year. It’s always our keenly anticipated major event of course, but every year seems to bring an unusual aspect to it – read on for this year’s. The course was presented in lovely condition throughout, and special thanks must go to the Green Staff for all their help throughout the week, and particularly on the Thursday when the rain hardly stopped throughout the day and the staff were out with squeegees and were also busy moving pin positions where necessary. Fortunately we were into the matchplay stages by then – and again fortunately the weather relented on the Friday and gave us all very pleasant conditions to either play in or watch finals day. The indoor staff at Meon also went out of their way to ensure that all help we could possibly require was on hand, and Meon Ladies’ Captain Liz had rallied a huge number of troops to be out on the course ballspotting. We cannot thank all at Meon enough for the wonderful 2015 Championship Week hosts they were.
This year a total of 199 players took part in the week, during which of course there is a championship available for all handicappers. That’s slightly fewer than usual but we hope that numbers will be back up next year.
The week always starts with a very busy day – qualifying rounds for the Challenge Salver and Challenge Bowl. Monday’s weather was fine but with a strong wind which no doubt contributed to the increase in the day’s CSS to 75 from Meon’s SSS of 73. In both events the matchplay qualifyers all buffered in their medal rounds – what a qualifying standard!
The Bronze Championships (two divisions, two champions) took place on the Tuesday and this is a nett medal competition which frequently needs amazing scores to win. CSS again reached 75 and the conditions were very similar to the previous day, ie dry but windy. All twelve of the event’s prizewinners would have received handicap reductions, the two trophy winners by eight units! Both Bronze Championships Division 1 and 2 were won with magnificent scores of 67!
Wednesdays always see the start of the County Championship itself with its 36-hole qualifying rounds. The field this year was considerably smaller than usual. The CSS for the morning round was 75 and in the afternoon it went up to 76. The qualifying rounds produced a matchplay field of 16 to savour.
And this year’s unusual aspect: every championship trophy (County Championship, Challenge Salver, Challenge Bowl, Bronze Div 1 and Bronze Div 2) was won by someone for the first time. Many congratulations to all our 2015 winners, and as always thanks too to all who take part and make this the most special event in our calendar.
Look forward to seeing everyone again next year – at Basingstoke GC from 16-20 May.
