FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
TUESDAY, 30 JUNE
AT LIPHOOK GC
(18-hole medal for pairs with a maximum combined handicap of 30)
Phew, what a scorcher of a day. The champions burnt the course up and the sun burnt everybody else at Liphook GC on Tuesday, 30 June. It was a fabulous championship. As always, Liphook was flawless – the course was beautifully presented and in addition to the tough challenge it always presents the format of the day was medal foursomes! Say no more – all that foursomes guilt to swallow. Following the joy or disappointment anyone might have been feeling after finishing their golf was a delicious summer buffet to enjoy.
Our Foursomes Championship, along with the County Championship and Seniors Championship, is one of Hampshire’s major scratch fixtures. Fast greens, a great course and medal foursomes can affect scoring – and indeed it is the case that this year the gap between the outstanding champions and the other prizewinners was wider than usual. Basingstoke’s Diane Oram has been Foursomes Champion for the last three years with Emma Powell from Osborne, but this year, with Emma having decamped to Australia for a while, she had to think of training a new partner. After presumably looking far and wide she teamed up this year with Kerry Smith from Waterlooville. I wouldn’t call Kerry rusty, but it is ten years since she was foursomes champion so that must have been a bit of a worry for Di? To say the partnership worked might be a bit of an understatement. Suffice it to say Di and Kerry took the scratch trophy with a 73, eight shots ahead of the field, and just edging the nett trophy with a 72 from Royal Winchester’s Gemma Duxfield and Julie Newbold whose nett score was 72½. It was a sparkling round and a privilege to watch, and huge congratulations to Kerry and Di on taking this year’s Foursomes Championships in such style.
Very many thanks indeed to Liphook GC for their hospitality for this major event in our diary. It is such a pity that we cannot hold any of our major fixtures at Liphook very often these days but when we can it will always be one of our great treats.
