Hull Shield 2015

(Two-player aggregate 18-hole medal competition entered by clubs)

Debbie Emery & Lynne Hayward winners of the Hull Shield 2015

88 ladies arrived in good time at Petersfield Golf Club and all managed to get out slightly ahead of schedule in an effort to avoid the threatening rain. Head Green Keeper Kevin and his team did a marvellous job getting most of the bunkers back in play after the recent deluges and the sun even shone for a short while early in the day. Sadly the sun didn’t last and persistent rain meant that the competitors had to return to the club house before play could be completed. An enormous thank you to the General Manager Shaun Manning, the wonderful Lady Captain Fran Dowty and her excellent team of greeters, ball spotters and starters for their friendly welcome and unstinting efforts throughout the day.

The competition was reduced to a 9 hole event with pairs from 44 clubs completing 9 holes on different nines so a reduced net total was achieved using half handicaps. Many were relieved as this also meant the event became a non-qualifier so handicaps did not change. A huge thank you to all you Hampshire and IOW ladies who competed and took the conditions in your stride with few complaints. In fact the curtailment mean’t everyone sat down together to eat the great spread laid on by the catering team and the noise level was up high with chatter and laughter so many of you must have enjoyed the day.

The scores were close and did not seem to depend whether teams had an early or late start but the pair at the top of the leaderboard were Debbie Emery and Lynne Hayward from Southampton with a combined score of 69.5. Southampton were followed by Ada Holmes and Robyn Duncan from Oak Park with 73 and 3rd place went to home club Petersfield, represented by Eileen Barron and Lynn Criddle with 75.
