CONGRATULATIONS TO WATERLOOVILLE, WINNERS OF THE KNIGHT CUP 2015
AND TO RUNNERS UP ROYAL WINCHESTER
It was quite a blustery and rather wet day for the final of this year’s Knight Cup but despite the weather, the course at Basingstoke GC was in great condition to welcome our finalists.
In the morning semi finals, Kerry Smith and Bev Penneket from Waterlooville faced Stoneham’s pairing of Sarah Bradshaw and Kim Holmes while Highcliffe Castle’s twosome Sue Hoare and Jill Partridge faced Julie Newbold and Christina Pink from Royal Winchester.
Royal Winchester really shot out of the starting blocks in blistering form, taking the first five holes. By the turn they had a commanding lead, but Highcliffe were not going to give in easily. They found their form and won both the 10th and 11th before halving the 12th and 13th but there was nothing more they could do to recover from Royal’s early lead.
In the other semi between Stoneham and Waterlooville neither pair could gain a foothold. The first six holes went one way or the other, and it was not until the seventh that a hole was halved. With the 8th and 9th also halved, the match was all square at the turn, neither side having been more than one up at any stage. However, on the back nine Waterlooville took both the 10th and 11th before halving the 12th and losing the 13th and 14th – so everything still all square after fourteen. Then Waterlooville edged a hole up on the 15th and the 16th was halved before Waterlooville sank a curler from the edge of the 17th green to finish what had been a match which had been impossible to call throughout.
In the final Waterlooville were the ones who took the lead after the first hole was halved but they had to work hard to keep pegging ahead. Four up at the turn they then lost the next three holes to be pegged back to 1up after twelve. The thirteenth was halved, but then Waterlooville won the 14th and 15th to get back to 3up and a half at the 16th concluded what had been an exciting, if rather wet, final.
