On Saturday, 2 April, 20 girls either new to golf, or to the Hampshire Academy came to Alresford GC for a 3 hour taster session. Some of the youngsters, ranging in age from 5 to 17, were visibly nervous, but soon thawed out playing versions of Baseball, timed fitness circuits and tug of war.
Following on from this, 8 junior Academy members, who were acting as Ambassadors, were allocated 6 teams between them. . There were 3 stations to work round. Putting, chipping and on the range. For putting and chipping the aim was not to sink the ball, but hitting cones and landing in circles. On the range the girls were taught elements of the swing. The afternoon concluded with a Texas Scramble over 4 holes of the Alresford par 3 course.
Coaches Kevin Flynn and Malcolm Scott were very pleased with the outcome of the sessions. Girls now have the option of going to 6 monthly Academy sessions, each of 3 hours, at one of 4 centres: Alresford GC, Tournerbury Golf Centre, Dibdens GC, Sherfield Oaks GC, starting on 10th April at Sherfield Oaks and 23rd April at the other centres. They will be joined by girls from the 2015 sessions.
