On a sunny, but windy day Hampshire fielded a team with handicaps higher than usual. There appeared to be several interclub Junior matches and competitions, and England training, which made availability for the lower handicap players very poor.. Sussex, having been made aware of this, stood some of their low handicap players down in an effort to match our handicaps.
However, it gave some of our up and coming juniors a great chance to play a lovely course. Shai-Emily Carter was our acting captain. Shai-Emily off 12 played Sussex captain Fenella Buss ( 5) and had a very close game, managing to just squeeze a win of 1 up. Next in was Charlotte Dack (13) playing Ellen Nicholls ( 12) These girls had the closest handicaps, but Charlotte had a great game and won comfortably. Sadly Hannah Hellyer. Maisie Ord, Grace Atherton, all playing their first game for Hampshire against another county lost their games. In the final game Rebecca Losh from Sussex had to give Emily Curwood 9 shots. The game was really close all the way, with Emily being at most 2 up, and at several stages the score was all square. Emily had some great putting to just get a half, or in her last 2 holes, force a win, to win the match 3 and 2.
The final result, Sussex 4, Hampshire 3 was a really good result for an inexperienced team. The Hampshire players should be proud of themselves.
