The sun shone all day with very patchy clouds occasionally drifting in on a light breeze making the course look deceptively straight forward. However, scores for the entire day proved it was tough going out there and playing long.
The greens had been prepared for our Hampshire Senior men earlier in May and the Jamega Pro Golf event earlier in the week so they were fast and tricky.
However, in the Division 2 Stableford competition the Weybrook ladies pressed hard for a place in the prizes, including past Hampshire Vets’ captain Lesley Donegan, but all just missed out to the visitors.
With the CSS rising to 76 and reductions only calculated, the top score of 31 points was shared by winner Linda Fossey from Meon Valley and runner-up Anne Luetchford of Corhampton. Linda had played the previous week at County Week in Basingstoke and had come down 1.7 in the Bronze Championships to be eligible to play at Weybrook so is obviously in form – well done Linda.
Special thanks go to lady captain Caroline Shipp for organising her ladies and members so well performing ball spotting duties and Captain Ron Tiplady and Bev Fowler as the very efficient starters they proved to be. Timings from two tees worked very well and mean’t everyone got away just before the rush hour started. Thank you Caroline and well done on raising £325 for your chosen charity St Michaels’ Hospice in Basingstoke and to all the ladies who kindly donated.
There will be a handful of players in Division 1 who will enjoy a cut in handicap after the CSS also rose to 76 for the medal round but more will get back a 0.1 increase as conditions proved tough for the majority.
Both our Champions netted under par rounds of 72 for Jane Bennett from Lee-on-the-Solent (off 6 but now probably 5) and Sue Hitchen from Royal Winchester carded a 71 to take the 2016 title of Veterans’ Champion.
A reminder from Hampshire Veterans’ Captain Anne Hannam, who presented the winners with their prizes, that she would still like to hear from any lady interested in playing in the friendly matches she has arranged against our neighbouring counties.
Our thanks to Weybrook Park GC for their generosity in hosting this year’s event and for all the help given to the HLCGA committee leading up to the day by Managers Lee Newman and Barrry Cole and all their staff.
