VETERANS’ CHAMPIONSHIP 2017
THURSDAY, 1st JUNE
Petersfield Golf Club
The most beautiful day saw in the start of meteorological Summer on 1st June at Petersfield GC for the 2017 Veterans’ Championship.
The course was in magnificent condition but bunkers caught out many and the requested favourable pin positions proved anything but! However, this sorts the field out and one never hears those playing and scoring well comment on such issues – strange?!
Anne Hannam (HLCGA Veterans’ Captain) thanked everyone and made the presentations.
In the Bronze division 27 ladies played a stableford and as the scores started to come in, it became evident that the CSS may increase with many carding totals in the 20s with only a few managing the low 30s and indeed it did increase to 74. The Isle of Wight ladies were going to have a successful day with the final two groups providing the winners. Di Tyler from Corhampton, only just back playing competitive golf after a foot injury, was sitting in the clubhouse for a couple of hours on highest score of 32 points but it was just before 5pm when Brenda Keyte from Shanklin & Sandown recorded 33 points and then Joy Jenkins (also Shanklin & Sandown) came in with a magnificent winning score of 38 points.
Very hot conditions for all taking part so many congratulations to you all.
Ladies captain Maggie Evans and her team were situated on strategic holes to ball spot and thanks to her for her attention to detail before the day. A special thanks to Pene Salter too for her admin assistance to Ann Younger our HLCGA Secretary. Petersfield President Derek Mustchin started all 83 players off and our thanks to him and General Manager Shaun Manning for allowing us use of the course and being part of Petersfield’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
The Veterans’ Championship Medal is split into two divisions based upon handicap and again low scores were a rare commodity with the CSS going up to 73 for these players. The early risers had the cooler conditions but many of the winners came from the second half of the field when the sun soared and the light breeze died away to almost nothing.
Mo Browne from Gosport & Stokes Bay was a clear winner in division 2 (16-20) with her magnificent nett 71 (gross 89) from Shanklin & Sandown’s Connie Huntington alone on 74. Linda Eales (Corhampton), Anne Morris (Blackmoor) and Alison Forfar (Stoneham) all on 75 were 3rd, 4th and 5th.
However, it was tight at the top in division 1 (+-15) with Judy Ames from Royal Winchester becoming 2017 Veterans’ Champion with a two under par 70 and Moya Abbott (Royal Winchester) was second with 72. Third was Marion Howells (Army) 74, 4th Chris Bodey (Rowlands Castle) 75 and 5th was Carol Owen (Bramshaw) with 76.
Deirdre Randall from Hartley Wintney had a 78 to take the Best Gross Salver and receive a cut in handicap from 7 to 6. Our congratulations also to Deirdre for qualifying in the regional round at Muswell Hill the day before in the Bridgestone “Chase Your Dream Trophy” (EG Medal Final to you and me!). Only the top ten in each region go through to the Final at Woodhall Spa in August.
It is the climate in Hampshire that persuades so many of our ladies to continue to play into their later years or maybe they just like golf and are good at it! When you convert Bramshaw’s Sue Buenfeld’s nett 75 into stableford points she won the “Super Seventies” with 33 points. Well done to all our Super 70s!
Everyone seemed to have a good day and the catering and bar staff led by Tracey Ainsley, Phil and Dom provided a truly sumptuous lunch and it was lovely seeing so many ladies enjoying the facilities of the large clubhouse and balcony on offer.
If you have never played at Petersfield before you should make the effort and enter one of their upcoming opens, but be warned its a tricky place to find (you want the Liss turning and follow signs to Hilliers Garden Centre) and its wickedly dangerous turning south onto the A3 for your homeward journey.
All our winners’ names are becoming more than familiar as the HLCGA season progresses and we wish them and everyone more success at future events with the next one being the Mixed Greensomes at Sandford Springs on 14th June.
