Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club

A wonderful sunny morning greeted us on the Isle of Wight for the 2017 Seniors Championships.

Temperatures steadily rose and good scores started to come in but it was later in the day when the very good scores started to emerge.

Seniors Championships Prize WinnersDespite comments that rounds were taking a long time it  didn’t seem to bother the majority of our 114 ladies taking part on the excellently prepared Shanklin & Sandown course.

In fact everything about the day was wonderful with the brilliant work done by Shanklin & Sandown ladies helping to make the day flow .  It’s a Championship and a scratch one at that which means everyone has to complete holes come what may.  Some holes proved very tricky for many and this sorts the good players on the day.

A major highlight from the day was Joyce Petrie from host club Shanklin & Sandown who had a hole in one on the par 3 9th. In recognition, Joyce has made a generous donation to the captain’s charity – the Stroke Association. Joyce was also presented with a bottle of Champagne by HLCGA President Jackie Keay from all the ladies in the association.

Seniors Championships Prize WinnersThere was also a birthday to celebrate. Many happy returns to Pat Jenkins from Lee-on-the-Solent who was forced to listen to a rendition of “Happy Birthday” during the prize presentation. We hope you enjoyed your day.

With three divisions there were lots of prizes on offer for those who managed a steady round and our congratulations go to overall Scratch Champion, Sue Gale from Weybrook park who carded a gross 74 and to our overall Handicap Champion Jean Dalton from Meon Valley who returned a nett 65.

Seniors’ Captain, Elaine Barrow thanked everyone at Shanklin & Sandown for helping to make the day run so smoothly. Our grateful thanks to Ladies’ Captain Jean Munds and her team of ball spotters and starters who were all magnificent and to Secretary Sarah Hammond who has been extremely helpful throughout the lead up to this competition and on the day.

We hope everyone made it back to the mainland safely and look forward to our next visit to Isle of Wight.
