Hull Shield

Alresford Golf Club

(Two-player aggregate 18-hole medal competition entered by clubs)

On the first day of meteorological Autumn, Alresford GC looked magnificent in the glorious sunshine as it played host to the Hull Shield, which dates back to 1907 – one of the oldest Hampshire competitions.

39 clubs sent their two representatives to play a medal and then have both scores added together for an aggregate nett result.  As you can imagine getting two players to both play well, at the same time, on different sides of a course, where the greens had been expertly prepared, is not an easy ask.  Head greenkeeper, Steve Privett and his team had done a magnificent job.

There were lots of the usual excuses and in fact scoring proved difficult, as no one broke par and the CSS went up to 73 (par 71 and SSS 72). However, everyone enjoyed the day and the high-class meal provided afterwards by Chris Pullinger and his staff went down very well.

Thank you to the generosity of you all for contributing £287 to the charity for research into Prostate Cancer and to Mary Panter and all the ladies out on the course assisting with ball spotting.  Starters Keith Monkhouse and Peter Spreadbury saw everyone off and timings worked well on both sides of the course; indeed the scores and results were in before 3.30pm!

A big thank you from the HLCGA committee especially to Jane & Malcolm Scott and David Maskery for all their efforts before and on the day to make it a special event and one which Alresford should be very proud of and perhaps not forget too soon.

Indeed, definitely a day to remember for Alresford pairing of Sally Reid and Wendy Pidduck, who’s nett aggregate score of 147 was enough on count back to secure them the trophy from Bramshaw pairing Carol Owen and Lesley Hibberd. Third and fourth place was also decided on count back between Royal Winchester, represented by Pauline Davies and Julie Newbold, and Army, represented by Anita Gipson and Wendy Allen.
