The sun was out and we were met with a very warm welcome from everyone at Petersfield Golf Club for the 2017 Knight Cup finals day. The morning semi finals were Rowlands Castle v Cams Hall and Southampton v Corhampton.
In the first semi final Rowlands Castle, represented by Diana Littler and Kathleen Tusler, were fast out of the blocks and were 4 up after 9 holes against Sian Roberts and Gina King from Cams Hall. However, Cams Hall were not giving in quietly and pulled it back to only 1 down through 13 holes. Unfortunately for them it was not to be their day and Rowlands Castle held their nerve to run out 3&2 winners.
In the second semi final things were much tighter between Southampton, represented by Lynne Hayward and Jan Smart, and Corhampton represented by Gill Cooper and Sue Jarman. Matters were all square after 9 holes and little between the teams. Southampton then managed to forge ahead and were 2 up after 13 then a birdie 2 on the par 3 15th put them in a commanding lead. Corhampton gave themselves a chance by winning the tricky 16th but Southampton saw the match out winning 2&1 with a half on the 17th.
The afternoon final between Rowlands Castle and Southampton was a tight affair throughout. Despite Southampton being 2 up at the turn the Rowlands Castle pair were always in it and gradually fought their way back to all square after 14 holes. They then won the the 15th to go ahead for the first time in the match and held that lead for 2 holes before Southampton squared the match on the 17th to take it down the final hole. Tension was high amongst players and supporters alike but Rowlands Castle were the ones to hold their nerve as Kathleen Tusler sunk the final putt on the 18th to ensure they took the trophy home.
