Centenary Foursomes

Hockley Golf Club

46 pairs representing clubs from across Hampshire arrived at Hockley Golf Club in the sunshine for the final of the Centenary Foursomes. As the cloud started to roll in, so did the scores and it soon became clear that foursomes had been a challenging format on an excellently prepared Hockley course.

As we all know, a good foursomes score depends upon a real understanding between playing partners. Where this existed good scores came in. Early leaders in the clubhouse waited patiently as there position slipped down the result sheet.

What County Captain, Kay Walshe (a member at Hockley) had described as a “gentle breeze” was described by the majority of pairs as “blowing a hoolie”. Clearly a difference of opinion, however the cards demonstrated that many pairs struggled on the back nine holes. On the positive side, the rain did stay away until after the final pairings had made their way into the clubhouse, where a delightful buffet with warm quiche and a selection of salads awaited.

There were a few pairs out there who managed better than others in the conditions, but only six couples managed to make it above 30 points. Between these six the scores were very tight, however it was the pairing of Dorinda Tanner and Jan Hodges from Weybrook Park who managed to top the pile with 33 points.

Ailsa Fraser and Celia Whitten were awarded 2nd place on countback from Mary Rook and Sarah Densham with 32 points, completing a great few days for Army following their Stoneham Cup victory on Thursday. Pairings from Waterlooville, Hayling, Royal Winchester and Corhampton were also in the prizes. Congratulations to all our prize winners.

It was clear from the cheerful chatter around the clubhouse and lovely comments at the HLCGA desk, that everyone had enjoyed their day. Many thanks to all the staff and ladies at Hockley for their fantastic hospitality during the day. The biscuits at halfway were especially appreciated. We look forward to holding this event next year at Skylark Golf Club on Wednesday 29th August.
