A total of 51 clubs entered this year’s Knight Cup so teams from The Burley, Osborne, South Winchester and Oak Park had already battled their way through several rounds to get to finals day. The early morning mist at Alresford GC had lifted and the sun shone brightly as the morning semi-finals got underway.
The first match was between The Burley, represented by Jane Walton and Jill Randell and Osborne, represented by Gillian Fahy and Jane Warren. The Burley were off to a good start and had managed to forge to 3 up through 5 holes before Osborne steadied the ship and pulled back to just 1 down at the turn. The back nine saw both teams exchange holes in an excellent battle and they stood on the 18th tee with The Burley just 1 up. A half at the final hole saw The Burley through to the afternoon final.
The second match was between South Winchester, represented by Jane Pascoe and Tricia Cameron and Oak Park, represented by Christine Leopold and Jean Deverill. Oak Park settled quickly winning the first two holes before South Winchester gradually worked their way back and the match was all square at the turn. Honours were very even over the back 9 with the first 3 holes being halved. South Winchester then briefly went into a 2 shot lead before Oak Park won the 17th to take the match down the 18th. However, they couldn’t quite get the win on the 18th to take the match to extra holes leaving South Winchester to progress through to the final.
Batteries were re-charged over the lunchtime break and South Winchester came storming out of the blocks to win the first 3 holes. A series of 5 halved holes saw The Burley steady the ship but they just couldn’t seem to get an elusive win before South Winchester won holes 8 and 9 to turn with a commanding 5 up lead. Despite their efforts The Burley couldn’t manage to make inroads into the deficit and South Winchester went on to record an impressive win and put their name on the trophy as 2018 Knight Cup winners, much to the delight of their supporters.
Congratulations to all four teams on reaching finals day and a special mention to the ladies from Osborne who made the trip over the Solent to support their team. Finally a big thank you to everyone at Alresford Golf Club for the warm welcome and their hospitality throughout the day.
