EG South Region Australian Spoons Final

Basingstoke Golf Club

The five Southern Region counties of Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex sent their winning pairs to Basingstoke GC for the Regional Final of England Golf’s Australian Spoons competition, this year hosted by HLCGA.  All received the warmest of welcomes from the north Hampshire club and the course was set up beautifully by the greenkeeping staff; Basingstoke has its Club Championships this weekend so conditions were perfect and the ironed greens fast!
53 pairs travelled from near and far and early scores indicated the level of difficulty out on the course, in very warm, muggy and sunny conditions.  However, as the day wore on and the temperature rose later scores began to increase too.
Our thanks go to lady captain Rachel Davis and all her ladies for being starters and marker and ball spotter, providing gratefully received refreshments half way round.  They also managed to raise a magnificent £350 for Macmillan Cancer Trust with a very innovative sock raffle so thank you all who contributed.
33 pts seemed to be leading for most of the day but our winners were Sue Johnstone and Jackie Brown from Pinner Hill GC in Middlesex with 39 pts pictured below and they received their winning vouchers from Hampshire Captain Debbie Tapply and President Chris Quinn.  Runners up were Hampshire pair Liz Styles and Jean Leggett from Hayling GC with 38 pts and in 3rd place with 35 pts were Surbiton GC (Surrey) Rosemary Valdinger and Meriel Tanner-Bateman.  Well done to all playing and good luck to Sue and Jackie when they play in the Grand Final at Woodhall Spa on 15th August

Basingstoke was an excellent host and our thanks to John Hiscock and Karen Stoker on the management, all bar and catering staff for the excellent service and food provided, the very helpful and skilled greenkeeping staff and those in the Pro Shop who were so welcoming too.
