Teams, caddies and supporters from Romsey, Royal Winchester, Hayling and Corhampton arrived bright and early on a sunny morning at Bramshaw Golf Club.
Corhampton and Royal Winchester got the day’s play underway with Tammy Andrews (Corhampton) and Julie Newbold (Royal Winchester) striking the first shots. Royal Winchester took early command of their semi-final, quickly building up a 3 – 1 lead through wins by Julie Newbold, Pauline Davies and Barbara Mills. Match 3 between Judy Ames and Jackie Kershaw was a tightly fought contest being all square after 18 holes they went down the 19th. Was this the start of a Corhampton comeback? With Judy and Jackie halving the 19th they were now playing the 20th. However, news came in that the Royal Winchester’s Team Captain, Sue Hitchen, had secured a win in her match and therefore an unassailable 4 – 1 lead. The remaining 2 matches on the course were therefore called in as Royal Winchester awaited their opponents for the afternoon final.
In the other semi-final between Hayling and Romsey it was Hayling who took early control, and like Royal Winchester they too built up a 3 – 1 lead through wins by Ali Cox, Alison Holland, and Clare Dodd. Romsey’s Lady Captain Julie Cole replied by winning her match against Hayling’s Hannah Hellyer on the 19th. The other 3 matches out on the course were all very tight affairs so despite having a 3 – 1 lead Hayling were by no means safe. News filtered back that matches 6 and 7 had been won by Romsey and with the remaining match approaching the 18th green it was a Solheim Cup situation all over again! To the delight of her watching teammates and supporters Carol Holden managed to sink the crucial putt and see Romsey through for a repeat of the 2018 final.
After the lunch time turnaround, the final got underway but the weather had turned and the matches started in the pouring rain. First blood went to Royal Winchester with Pauline Davies beating Morgan Peterson. In the front match Julie Cole and Julie Newbold had a tight match which Julie eventually won on the 17th hole. Jill Sparkes (Romsey) had a resounding victory over Sheila Rehorn and then Sue Hitchen put Royal Winchester ahead 3-1 with her 6/4 win over Carol Holden.
However, with the final 3 matches out on the course in worsening conditions, Romsey were not letting go of the trophy without a fight. Lucy Molland added another victory for Romsey by defeating Judy Ames on the 18 hole. Sally Holden then levelled the score with her win over Barbara Mills. Once again the trophy was to be decided in the final pairing and Romsey’s Tracy Grimes defeated Marilyn Monger on the 17th hole.
Special congratulations should go to Romsey for retaining the trophy in another tightly contested final and to Hayling, Corhampton and Royal Winchester for reaching finals day.
Our thanks go to Bramshaw Golf Club for allowing us to use their excellent course and to the Lady Captain for all her help in organising the day and to Jax Griffin who started all the morning matches.
