Vets’ Team Report 2019

The first Inter-County match was held at Petersfield Golf Club on 20 May 2019 against Sussex who sent a very strong side including their County Captain Ann Carnegie.  Unfortunately we lost that one 2/5 but everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

On 30 May 2019 our second match was held at East Berks Golf Club against Berkshire we were successful on this occasion and won 4 ½ to 2 ½.

Hampshire vs Somerset Monday 17th June at New Forest GC

Vets at New Forest

Linda had gathered quite a formidable team around her for the 3rd friendly of the season and Hampshire had a convincing 5-2 win over a less experienced Somerset side.  Wonderful hospitality from the very small ladies section at New Forest GC, excellent food afterwards and convivial company made for a most enjoyable day.

Nothing was going to get this little fellow to move from the fairway despite several drives quite close to him!

On Monday 15 July 2019 our 4th match was played at Skylark Golf & Country Club it was hard fought by both teams resulting in a draw 3 ½ to 3 ½ .

I would like to give my thanks to the clubs where we held Home matches which were Petersfield, New Forest and Skylark they were all most helpful and welcoming the courses and catering were very good.

For our last match on Monday 9th September the HLCGA Vets team travelled to Ryde Golf Club, which many of the team had not played before.  The weather forecast was not too good but the rain did not stop us from playing and enjoying this lovey 9 hole course close to Fishbourne.

We had a very good result with a win for Hampshire of 3½ to 1½ against an assembled IOW team from the other clubs on the island.  Thank you to all the ladies who played, those who drove, to IWLGA Captain Sara Weech and her IOW team and to Ryde GC for the hospitality and the enjoyable meal provided.  It was also good to meet IWLGA President Tricia Ball and IWLGA Vice Captain Judy Richardson.

Thanks to all who volunteered to play this year and let’s hope the word is spreading about how much fun these matches are and what a marvellous opportunity they are to play other courses for very little and get a meal too!

Some of the less experienced team had never been on the Portsmouth to Fishbourne ferry before (sheltered lives they lead) so here are a few celebrating the win and an earlier ferry home!

Thank you for a most enjoyable 2 years as your Veterans’  Captain – Linda Eales
