Better late than never, as they say, but we finally have a 2020 County Champion!
On a fresh but dry morning the 4 qualifying finalists from the Autumn Division 1 Championships, back on 1st October, gathered at the pristine looking Brokenhurst Manor GC for the semi-finals and final of the delayed County Championships.
Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) v Aimee Paterson (North Hants) and Emma Allen (Stoneham) v Gemma Burgess (North Hants) provided us with two closely fought and exciting semi-final matches, with both being concluded on the 18th. Kerry and Aimee both held the lead at different times during their match and with Aimee winning 17th, it was all square down the 18th! Aimee secured her par leaving Kerry with a birdie opportunity, which she duly converted to win the match 1 up.
In the 2nd semi-final Emma and Gemma were quick out of the blocks, seeing Gemma winning the 1st with a birdie followed by Emma’s eagle on the par 5 second hole beating Gemma’s birdie! Further great golf continued and at the turn Emma was 2 up. Although Gemma managed to pull one back at the 10th, Emma won both 11 and 12 to go 3 up. However, Gemma was not yet done and having won the 15th, she then birdied 16 to pull back to just 1 down with 2 to play. The 17th was halved and so to the 18th where Emma’s par was good enough to see her through.
So to the final between Kerry, the defending champion, and Emma, who won the Championship back in 2012 as a junior. The front 9 was a very tight affair, and with both being under par for their rounds Emma held a 1 up lead at the turn. Further great golf followed from both players as Emma gradually forged further ahead to be 3 up after 14. On the 15th Kerry secured her par, leaving Emma with a 15 foot birdie putt from the top edge of the green. Emma’s putting had been excellent all day and she slotted a further one home to win the match.
Congratulations to all four finalists who treated us to a display of stunning matchplay golf, and particular congratulations to Emma Allen, our 2020 County Champion.
A huge thank you to Brokenhurst Manor GC, for allowing us to use their course and facilities to enable us to conclude this event.
