A strong young Hampshire team travelled to The Dyke Golf Club in Sussex for the first Stovold Trophy match of the 2021 golfing season. The course perched high near Devil’s Dyke overlooks Brighton, Shoreham and the South Downs with the clubhouse windows having stunning coastal views.
The match was the first second team experience for Georgina Carter, Samantha Gregory and Hannah Dymott with the more experienced Aileen Simpson, Becky Scott and Tammy Andrews paired up with them for the morning foursomes. Some excellent golf, including three consecutive 3s around the turn from Tammy and Hannah, saw Hampshire take an impressive three nil lead at lunchtime.
We then lost the wonderful views as a sea fret descended and the team captains considered resorting to the Stovold rules to decide the outcome. Thankfully, the breezes moved the bad weather along, the skies cleared and the girls were able to start the afternoon singles.
A Sussex fightback was always to be expected and inspired play saw them level the match at four all. What tension and what a relief when a cool, collected Tammy sank a putt for par on the long par three 17th to seal her 2 and 1 win.
Thank you to Sally, the Sussex team manager, for her exceptionally warm welcome and to The Dyke for giving Hampshire and Sussex the opportunity to play this match at their beautiful and memorable golf club.
Most of all, thank you to a talented, friendly and enthusiastic team of Hampshire youngsters who represented their county brilliantly.
