Youth blended with experience as the Hampshire Second Team took on Kent at Waterlooville GC on a day which promised dry conditions yet started with waterproofs and umbrellas. This did nothing to dampen the team spirit of Becky Scott and Georgina Carter, who led us out. Followed by Alex Sutherland, on her debut for Hampshire seconds, and Tammy Andrews. Lastly, Diane Oram and Sarah Deacon, enjoying the opportunity to play foursomes together for the first time in Hampshire blue.
The three Hampshire pairings battled hard in the morning foursomes and a halved session resulted. Great credit to Tammy who sank a putt on the last green to secure her and Alex’s half point.
All to play for in the afternoon singles. By now the skies had cleared and the umbrellas were shielding us from the sun, such is summer in the UK.
Diane and Becky at the front secured our first two points and shortly afterwards Alex finished her game on the 15th green. A halved match was certain but could Hampshire achieve a win?
In the hands of Georgina, of course they could. But it was tense and a perfect chip from G at the 17th meant the overall match win. A halved last hole saw a 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 result to Hampshire.
Thank you to Ingrid and her Kent team for playing in such a friendly and sporting manner and to Waterlooville GC who hosted us and allowed us to play their course, which was in fabulous condition.
Thanks also to County Captain, Jill, for supporting us despite a previous four full days with the juniors at Puttenham and to Jane Scott for her encouragement on the course as well as providing early morning traffic reports on the M27 closures.
