The summer sunshine showed off Alresford GC at its very best as the Hampshire Stovold Trophy team played Surrey in the third match of their 2021 campaign. A tough contest was expected against a strong Surrey team and, oh boy, that is exactly what we got.
Becky Scott and Georgina Carter led us out, followed by Alex Sutherland and the Isle of Wight’s Dawn Hodge, and lastly the pairing of Tammy Andrews and Brooke MacArthur.
The morning foursomes matches were close all the way round. Surrey just had the edge in the first two games, meaning that the Hampshire supporters were relieved when Tammy and Brooke, on Brooke’s second team debut, played the 18th beautifully in par to earn a hard fought half point.
The team remained positive over lunch and battled hard against their opposition in the afternoon singles. There were no easy matches for Surrey but their golf was flawless when it mattered. Consequently, how thrilled we were when Georgina Carter and Tammy Andrews both won their games on the eighteenth green.
Congratulations to Katrina and her team who were awesome and deserved the 6 1/2 to 2 1/2 win but great credit to Hampshire who fought hard and played some great golf too, with terrific team spirit and camaraderie.
Thank you to Alresford GC for their warm welcome and to the many supporters in Hampshire blue who were entertained by some wonderful second team county golf.
