Sudbury GC was the destination for the Hampshire second team as they travelled for the last Stovold Trophy match of 2021. The course is a green oasis in North London and has fabulous views across to Heathrow Airport in one direction and central London in the other.
We were welcomed warmly by Rose and her Middlesex team and it was encouraging to see both counties giving youngsters the experience of second team golf. Representing Hampshire were Tammy Andrews partnering Dawn Hodge, Becky Scott with Georgina Carter and playing third, Hannah Dymott and Brooke MacArthur.
Close foursomes matches resulted in a lunchtime lead to Middlesex of 2 to 1. Becky and Georgina have been a strong pairing over the summer and didn’t disappoint with a win in their morning game.
The team resolved to finish their campaign with a flourish and went out with renewed determination in the afternoon, which was by now hot and sunny. In the front game Becky soon delivered the first point and we knew that Hannah had a healthy lead, but the other games were too close to call. Notably Dawn won the uphill, intimidating par three 18th for her half point and Brooke and Georgina also came up trumps with excellent golf on the back nine.
The team were delighted with the eventual result of 5 1/2 to 3 1/2, a great fight back from a lunchtime deficit.
Thank you to Sudbury GC for their warm hospitality, to Rose for her expert buggy driving and friendly company and, most of all, the Hampshire second team players who have been phenomenal this year. As things stand we will finish as runners up to Surrey in the 2021 Stovold Trophy. A terrific result Hampshire!
