Teams, caddies and supporters from Stoneham, Barton-on-Sea, Hayling and Basingstoke arrived bright and early on a lovely sunny morning at Royal Winchester Golf Club.
Stoneham and Barton-on-Sea got the day’s play underway with Cara Patient from Stoneham and Amanda Green from Barton-on-Sea striking the first shots. Although all the matches were quite close Stoneham got the day off to a brilliant start winning the first four matches and therefore progressing to the final.
In the other semi-final between Hayling and Basingstoke it was Basingstoke who took early control winning the first two matches, with Diane Oram winnng on the 19th in a closely contested match against Hannah Hellyer, and Sarah Deacon winning on 20th hole against Arlene Castle. Hayling replied by winning the next two matches, with Ali Cox and Alison Holland both winning 3 and 2. Carron Schusler then put Hayling ahead by winning her match but Basingstoke were not to be beaten and Pat Dominey and Berny Boyd won the next two matches to put Basingstoke through to the final.
After the lunch time turnaround, the final got underway with a slight change to the Stoneham team with Brooke MacArthur leading the team against Diane Oram. This was a very close match with excellent golf which Diane won 2 and 1. Sarah Deacon added to Basingstoke’s lead in another closely fought match winning on 19th hole. News filtered through that Stoneham had won the fourth match but Basingstoke had won the 5th match to put them 3-1 ahead. The 6th and 7th matches went to Stoneham so this left the third match between Julie Newbold from Stoneham and Trisha Moorfield from Basingstoke still out on the course to decide the trophy. This was a tight match with never more than 2 holes in it. Tricia took the lead on the 16th hole for the first time, they halved the short 17th and Julie won the 18th to take them to extra holes. The first hole was halved in par and then Julie made an excellent par on the second extra hole to win that match and the trophy for Stoneham.
Congratulations to all the Stoneham players and for winning the trophy for the first time since 1996.
Our thanks go to Royal Winchester Golf Club for allowing us to use their excellent course and to the Lady Captain, Margaret Tucker, who started all the morning matches.
