First of all I would like to thank all the lovely ladies that played for Hampshire Ladies Vets team this year. 45 ladies made themselves available for at least 1 match and many for several, which was excellent and apart from a couple of late withdrawals, everybody did get at least 1 game.
Although we got off to a shaky start with more lockdown at the start of the year, restrictions were lifted sufficiently for us to be able to go ahead with our first Vets Match against Berkshire @ Castle Royle on 13th May 2021.
It was a bit of a damp day and as COVID restrictions were still in force, we could not eat in the clubhouse. Berkshire provided us with a fairly substantial picnic which some of ate as we went round the course. Castle Royle was in excellent condition probably due to them not having any green fees. The bunkers were tricky however and there were plenty of them, which may have accounted for our 4½ to 2½ loss, despite some very close matches.
Unfortunately our Vets Championship could not take place in June but luckily Army Golf Club was able to rearrange the date to September.
Our 2nd Vets match was at Barton on Sea on 12th July against Dorset. The weather was dreadful on the journey down and thunder and lightning was forecast for the afternoon. However we were lucky, the rain stopped as our matches began and it turned out to be a lovely afternoon, on a particularly stunning course which was in superb condition. The food and welcome at Barton was excellent and we had a really lovely day. The result was a very friendly draw.
On a very wet and windy August 5th we travelled to Kingsdown in Wiltshire. It was such a pity the weather was so bad as it is a lovely course, but we were unable to play it at its best. Wiltshire made us very welcome and despite the conditions we halved the match.
Two weeks later on 27th August we were at Waterlooville entertaining Sussex and the weather was thankfully much improved. Again we were made very welcome by the club, the course was in excellent condition and the food was excellent, if a little generous 😊. The match was played in very good spirit although we narrowly lost to Sussex by 3 matches to 4.
Our match against Somerset was played at Royal Winchester on 7th September and again the weather was relatively kind. The hospitality was excellent and the food very nice indeed. The Somerset ladies were very generous, allowing us to beat them by 7 games to 0!!
The last match of the year as always is our annual trip to the IOW. This is always a very popular match with many ladies indicating their availability. We had a very smooth crossing across The Solent and an easy drive down to Shanklin and Sandown. Once again we had a very warm welcome from the IOW ladies and a very enjoyable if rather slow round of golf in good weather. The food and hospitality was lovely and we came away with a 6 games to 1 win.
Here are most of the team on the way home 😊
So we end the year with a good record of two defeats, two draws and two wins.
Next year we have some lovely fixtures to look forward to:
