Tia Brammer (Bramshaw) secures her first win in a Hampshire Junior Girls event at Lee-on-the-Solent.
My reports for Junior Spring Meeting often start with an opening line that could have come straight from the pen of A. A. Milne. However, it was not a blustery day, nor was it a wet a windy day, in fact it was a glorious sunny day, perfect for a spot of competitive golf.
16 eager young golfers from across Hampshire arrived at a well manicured Lee-on-the-Solent for our first competitive event of 2022, an 18-hole stableford competition. My enormous thanks to Jane Scott our county President who got all the girls started on the first tee. A huge well done to all four girls teeing it up in their first ever Hampshire event, although I’m sure there must have been a few nerves for Lilly-Belle Austen (North Hants), Connie Lai (Alresford), Madison Mclaren (Gosport & Stokes Bay) and Millie Atthis (Lee-on-the-Solent), they most certainly didn’t show in the four beautiful drives that left the first tee.
Lee-on-the-Solent was at it’s best and provided a good challenge for many of our golfers, especially our single figure girls. I unfortunately didn’t witness it myself, but I did hear a great account of a fantastic eagle on the par 5 sixth hole for Gemma Burgess (North Hants), which at stroke index 1 on the card, scored Gemma 5 stableford points and no doubt helped her to secure her place as the scratch winner of this year’s event.
After all our girls had come through the turn, I hurried over to the 14th green to watch all our groups tackle the 204 yard par 3. It was so exciting to see a great mix of wonderful tee shots, some fearless up & downs from over the right hand green-side bunker and some brilliant putting on this incredibly challenging hole.
Before long we were back in the clubhouse, ready to input the scores and finalise our leaderboard. Although she missed out on the prizes, a huge shout out to Abigail Dymott who had an impressive 38 points off her new handicap index of 9.7. I’m even more delighted to say that after that 38, Abi has now been cut to 8.8, cementing her place in the single figure handicap zone. Well done Abi, we’re all really thrilled for you, keep up the great golf.
It was however, some of our newer golfers that we were so pleased to see in the winners circle at this year’s first event. In third place nett with 39 points was Lilly-Belle Austen (North Hants) and in second place nett, also with 39 points on countback was Millie Atthis (Lee-on-the-Solent). Congratulations girls, lovely to see you out there playing some great golf and I hope we see you at many more Hampshire events to come.
As I mentioned earlier in this report, our scratch winner was Gemma Burgess (North Hants) with 30 points off scratch. Well done Gem, a really good start to the Hampshire season and more to come I’m sure.
Last but not least, our Junior Spring Meeting Winner for 2022 with an impressive 40 points, from Bramshaw Golf Club was Tia Brammer. This was Tia’s second time playing in a Hampshire event after playing in the Autumn Meeting last October and was a really steady round of golf with a number of pars on the card. A massive well done Tia, a fantastic start to your 2022 season!
As always a few thank yous to close out this report. First and foremost to Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club for hosting this event for us, the course was in brilliant condition. To the competitions team Noan, Pauline & Jude for organising the venue, entries and managing the competition scores. To Carron, our fantastic referee out on the course, Jane for starting the girls and walking the course to support the girls and Kate for acting as sherpard for our final few groups. We couldn’t do these events without your support so a huge thank you.
Quick call out that the next competition is Junior Championship and Douglas Cup, you can find details and the entry form here. The competition takes place on 14th August at Royal Winchester GC and entries will close at the end of July.
Also, Junior Summer Knockout will start in June. This is a great way to play a bit of competitive matchplay and get to play other courses. It’s free to enter and the entry form is here.
Well done to all our prize winners, special congratulations to Tia on your first win. Keep enjoying your golf girls and I look forward to seeing you all at the next event.
