On a scorching August day, we welcomed 22 girls and ladies to Royal Winchester Golf Club for our 2022 Junior & Intermediate Championship. Congratulations to our Scratch Champions, Gemma Burgess (North Hants) who retained the Junior Championship for the third consecutive year and Lily Walker (North Hants) who took home the Intermediate Scratch Trophy. Our nett winner in the Junior Championship was Junior Captain Hannah Dymott (Meon Valley), Georgina Carter (North Hants) won the nett in the Intermediate division and the winner of this year’s Douglas Cup was Millie Atthis (Lee-on-the-Solent).
With an amber weather warning in place for extreme heat, the format year’s two Championship divisions were reduced to 18 holes. The heat was intense but as always the girls and ladies taking part from across the county took it in their stride with plenty of smiles. After getting nine groups underway on the first tee, I made my way over to the tenth green to help with some ball spotting and watch each group ascend the elevated green. Just as I had on the first tee, I witnessed some fantastic ball striking. The tenth at Royal Winchester is a tricky hole but I saw some great approach shots and lovely birdie from Junior County Champion Gemma Burgess.
After a busy week at Junior County Match Week in Kent, Chief hydration officer aka our fabulous safeguarding officer Liz Hastings, was back on duty making sure everyone had plenty of water. Our wonderful referees Di and Carron were also helping us to get water to the girls and of course doing their usual great job of keeping everyone moving and assisting with those all important rules queries.
I’d like to thank our Competitions Director Noan and her team of Jude and Pauline for all their assistance with arranging and running yesterday’s competition. Importantly, I’d like to thank Royal Winchester for hosting us for this event. We were made to feel extremely welcome, nothing was too much trouble and the food was excellent.
Many congratulations to all of our winners and well done to everyone for making it around in the heat.
