Dew was on the ground as the 6 teams arrived at Liphook GC for the day ahead and the atmosphere in the Clubhouse was buzzing as they prepared for the semi finals.
The morning matches in the Trophy paired Army against Romsey and North Hants against Hayling.
Annie Turrell from Army and Sara Barnes from Romsey tee’d off in the first semi final. Annie went racing ahead and won the match by the 12th hole. The 2nd match between Sarah Tyerman and Julie Cole was a much closer fought match, with Army 1 up going into the 18th and Romsey fighting back to take the
match down the 19th. However Army came through on the 21st hole, taking their team through to the final. While this was going on the 3rd match between Tilly Pletts and Helen Sleightholme was also a very close affair with Romsey coming through on the 18th.
The first match in the 2nd semi-final saw Raffi Dyer from Hayling up against Aimee Paterson from North Hants. Raffi came through this match winning 5 & 4. Hannah Hellyer from Hayling then took on Izzy Lawson from North Hants and in a close fought match Hannah came through on the 16th hole, securing Hayling’s place in the final. In The 3rd match, Georgina Carter from North Hants came through beating Arlene Castle.
Next up came the North Hants Plate Final, where Barton-on-Sea took on Corhampton. This match started with Amanda Green from Barton taking on Jackie Kershaw from Corhampton. This was a close encounter with Amanda winning on the 16th hole. Tammy Andrews and Stevie Crozier Hunt proved too
strong for their opponents Angelena Brewer and Julie Benford and won their matches and ensured that Corhampton retained the North Hants Plate.
By the time the final was underway in the afternoon, the sun was shining and the course was looking superb. In the first match, Raffi from Hayling tee’d off followed by her opponent Annie Turrell. Raffi went ahead and remained in control of her match and clocked up a 6 & 5 victory. Meanwhile match 2 between Ali Cox and Helen Sleightholme was a much closer affair. Neither player managed more than a 1 hole lead. All square at the turn and the spectators were treated to a terrific battle up to the 18th hole with Ali finally coming through to win 2 up. The 3rd match between Hannah Hellyer from Hayling and Sarah Tyerman from Army saw Hayling 5 up at the turn, but Army started to fight back and managed to pull back to only 1 down by the 16th hole. The match carried on to the 18th with Hayling holding on and winning 1 up.
Congratulations to all 6 teams who made it through to finals day and treated us to some “sparkling” golf and to Hayling, the winners of the North Hants Trophy for 2022.
Our thanks go the Liphook Golf Club for allowing us to use the course and for their hospitality throughout the whole day which ensured everything ran smoothly.
