Alresford Cup 2019
29th September, 2019
at Alresford Golf Club
Nine counties are playing for the prestigious Alresford Cup this year (donated by the Ladies of Alresford GC and held at Alresford Golf Club). A team consists of six junior girls who each play an individual full handicap Stableford round, the best four scores to count.
Nothing could dampen the atmosphere and excitement at today’s event and all 9 counties played their hearts out. Handicaps ranged from 2 to 29 and the standard of play was excellent and some very impressive scores were recorded. None more so than Ellie Phillips, from Oxfordshire, who managed 45 pts in drizzly conditions; Mary Rook, Alresford’s Club Vice Captain, presented Ellie with her own personal momento of her round.
Mary founded this event in her captain’s year at Alresford in 2005 and for the first time in its history, a hole in one was achieved today. Chloe Walkington, playing off 16 from Castle Royle Club in Berkshire, scored one on the par 3 13th so Mary also had pleasure in presenting Chloe with a lovely engraved glass.
We welcomed Oxforshire to the event for the first time this year and very much hope they will return next year.
Scores were amazing and in 2nd place with 151pts was host Hampshire – 128pts won in 2018. The CSS was 71 and there will be lots of cuts to handicaps in the morning.
However, victorious this year and to everyone’s joy was Middlesex who sent a very able side and won by 3 pts with 154pts. Their Vice President and Junior Organiser Di Williams, was overcome and totally shocked by the win and took her time coming forward to receive the Cup with her team.
Well done Middlesex and the other 8 counties for coming together to play for this trophy in such convivial spirits with great enthusiasm. The talent on show was awesome and had many watching adults wondering why their swings were not quite the same as these stars of the future!
Our grateful thanks to all at AGC for their hospitatlity, welcome and wonderful service provided and we look forward to a drier day on Sunday 20th September in 2020.
All the girls, parents and officials should be comended for travelling so far and for coping with the rather grey and damp conditions for some of the day. Your support makes this event and a big thank you to Mary’s Shepherdesses for walking round with each group and HLCGA committee members for monitoring events out on the course.
