Army Golf Club played host to our 2nd Team's second Stovold Trophy match against Middlesex on a hot and humid, yet overcast day. Vice Captain Eilean picked 3 on-form junior players for this match (Georgia Richardson, Abby Dymott and Tia Brammer) and they all rose to the big occasion. Paired in the morning Foursomes matches with the experienced Georgina Carter, Bex Scott and Lily Walker, the rookies quickly settled and Hampshire won the Foursomes round 2-1. Lily set the pace in the afternoon singles matches and we watched some sizzling golf by both players in a tightly fought match but Lily came through winning 2&1. Meanwhile, our 13 year old superstar, Georgia, who teed off in the 2nd flight, won her match 4&3 claiming the 1st afternoon point for Hampshire and her 1st Stovold singles win! Rookies Abby & Tia both stamped their authority in their matches winning 6&5 and 6&4 respectively whilst Georgina battled hard in the 3rd flight match against her very experienced opponent. Despite going 2 up through 10, her opponent clawed back the deficit and both Par 3s on the back 9 proved Georgina's undoing and she lost 2&1 - another nail-biting match. Our anchor-woman, Bex, proved just too strong for her opponent and had a comfortable 5&4 win with some fine 'Houdini' style shots in the process! A successful afternoon winning 5 from 6 singles matches and securing a good 7-2 win against an experienced team. All the matches were played in the best spirit and both teams are to be congratulated for some wonderful golf. The rookies had a great day playing at senior level and are now very much looking forward to Junior County Match Week at Crews Hill next week. Poppy (the mascot) enjoyed the fuss they gave her all day too!
A big thanks to Army Golf Club for hosting us so well. The course was in excellent condition and the catering was exceptional. It was particularly nice to see the course marshals (Andy & Kev) ensuring the matches were able to play at a good pace - it was much appreciated by all the players
