HAYLING TROPHY FINAL

30TH MAY 2024 at Hayling Golf Club

It was not the warm, sunny day we had hoped for as the 2024 Hayling Trophy Final got underway.  As we all stood at the first tee, the blue Hampshire Ladies Golf “sails” were blowing at more than just a flutter!!!

However, Hilary Bartlett from Hayling hit the first ball which went flying towards the green, followed by a great tee shot from Jane Payne from Stoneham.  This match was nip and tuck and they were all square after 9 holes.

Nicky Mackenzie from Stoneham started to take control of the 2nd match against Petro Henning and was 3 up on the turn.

In the 3rd match, Jean Leggett from Hayling went 3 up after 7 holes but Lisa Fuller from Stoneham fought back and Hayling were 1 up on the turn.

Hayling were 3 up in the remaining 2 matches at the turn, but Stoneham had everything to play for.

Hayling then began to take control on their home turf and the first result that came in was match 1 as Hilary Bartlett won 4 and 3.

Stoneham then came in with a convincing 6 and 4 win from Nicky Mackenzie.

As the afternoon went on and the rain started to fall, Hayling were up in all the remaining matches and Jean Leggett in match 3 came in with a 4 and 3 win.

Heather Parham, playing at the back of the field, had been quietly “chipping” away and the announcement came through that she had won 6 and 4 and the remaining matches were called in, giving an overall win to Hayling.

The atmosphere in the Clubhouse afterwards was buzzing and both teams were congratulated, with Jane Scott, President of Hampshire Ladies Golf, presenting the trophies.  The last time Hayling had won the trophy was 2014 so they were delighted to be able to keep in at “home”.

I would like to thank Captain Angela Wyer for her help in the run up and for getting the Final underway and to all at Hayling for their help in making the day run so successfully and for the use of their fantastic course and clubhouse!
